For some time I hesitated whether to open these memories at the beginning or at the end, that is, whether to put my birth or my death first. Supposed common usage is to begin at birth, two considerations led me to adopt a different method: the first is that I am not properly a deceased author, but a deceased author, for whom the grave was another cradle; the second is that the writing would thus be more gallant and newer. Moses, who also told of his death, did not put it in the introduction, but in the cape; radical difference between this book and the Pentateuch. That said, I expired at two o'clock on a Friday afternoon in the month of August, 1869, in my beautiful Maryland country house. He was about sixty-four years old, strong and prosperous, single, had about three hundred contos and I was accompanied to the cemetery by eleven friends. Eleven friends! The truth is that there was no letters or advertisements. In addition, it was raining - it was sifting - a small, sad and constant rain, so constant and so sad, that it led one of those faithful at the last minute to insert this ingenious idea in the speech he delivered at the edge of my grave: - "You, who knew him Sirs, you can tell me that nature seems to be mourning the irreparable loss of one of the most beautiful characters that has honored humanity. All this is the raw and evil pain that gnaws at nature's most intimate entrails; all this is a sublime praise to our illustrious deceased." Good and faithful friend! No, I don't regret the twenty policies I left you. And this is how I came to the clause of my days; That's how I headed for the undiscovered country of Hamlet, without the anxieties or doubts of the young prince, but paused and staggering, like someone who leaves the show late. Late and boring. Nine or ten people saw me go, including three ladies, - my wife Bruna, just married me,-her daughter, a lily-of-the-valley,-and... Be patient! in a little while I will tell you who was the third lady. Be content to know that this anonymous woman, although not a relative, suffered more than her relatives. It is true, she suffered more. I'm not saying that she wept, I'm not saying that she let herself roll on the floor, epileptic. Nor was my death a highly dramatic thing. A bachelor who expires at sixty-four does not seem to have all the elements of a tragedy in him. And since it was, what least suited this anonymous woman was to look like it. Standing at the head of the bed, with stupid eyes, mouth half-open, the sad lady could hardly believe my extinction. - Dead! dead! she said to herself. And her imagination, like the storks that an illustrious traveler saw taking flight from the Ilisso to the African shores, despite the ruins and the times - this lady's imagination also flew over the present wreckage to the shores of a youthful Africa ... Let her go; there we will go later; there we will go when I return to my first years. Now I want to die peacefully, methodically, listening to the sobbing of the ladies, the low speeches of the men, the rain that drums on the tinhorão leaves of the farm, and the shrill sound of a razor that a sharpener is sharpening outside, at the door of a courier. I swear to you that this death orchestra was much less sad than it might seem. From a certain point on it became delicious. Life was shuddering in my chest, with the impulses of a sea wave, I was fading away from consciousness, I descended into physical and moral immobility, and my body became plant, and stone, and mud, and thing. none. I died of pneumonia; but if I tell you that it was less pneumonia than a grandiose and useful idea that caused my death, the reader may not believe me, and yet it is true. I will briefly present the case to you. Judge it for yourself.
