In a city devastated by war, we follow the journey of two survivors who have learned, each in their own way, to live with violence, loss, and loneliness. He does not know that he saved her life. She knows only that he is more dangerous than the killers who threatened her. Neither of them seeks company. Nor do they believe that there is still room for kindness in a world where surviving demands so much. But a dead boy and an almost insignificant act of kindness end up intertwining their fates. Between small acts of care, silences, and difficult choices, two strangers discover that surviving the war may not be as difficult as learning to live after everything they have lost.
In a world subjugated by unstable gods and ruthless tyrants, blood carries both the burden of slavery and the key to the ruin of empires. At five years old, he has energy to spare, an appetite that seems endless, and a collection of questions that his mother doesn't always know how to answer. Lately, however, some things have begun to worry Jaqueline. Her son complains of pains that no one can explain, spends restless nights, and displays behaviors that are increasingly difficult to understand. Between appointments, tests, and medical recommendations, she tries to find an explanation. When an incident in a class leaves another child seriously injured, Jaqueline begins to fear that she is missing something important. She just doesn't imagine how right she is.
The summer of 1989 promised to be just another one among so many. Six friends, about to leave school behind, decide to escape the routine and the bittersweet goodbyes with an improvised trip. The destination: an isolated cabin, lent by Adam's uncle, hidden deep in the Blackwood Hills forest. A perfect place to drink, laugh, and enjoy their youth, far from everything and everyone. The isolation seems like paradise. Noah's old van crosses the dirt road, the lake reflects the light of the setting sun, and the promise of peaceful days welcomes them. But the Blackwood forest is not just a silent backdrop. It is ancient, jealous, and has its own rules.
