Synopsis

Two or three times he asked her to play something on the old piano. Wladek played, and he played with gusto. Although he felt safer alone, there was a certain pleasure in being listened to. He liked it when he saw the officer close his eyes, remove his hands from his pockets and relax his shoulders. When his eyes met and there was satisfaction in both of them. He liked it when, at the end of each melody, the officer smiled, and as sadistic as he might seem, he liked it even more when he cried.

“The Pianist is one of the best films I've ever seen in my life, and it was a pleasant surprise to find a story about it here. Adrien Brody was magnificent as always in the role of Szpilman, and his performance touches the hardest of hearts. In this fic, there is a rapprochement between Szpilman and Wilm, both thirsty for food, human warmth, affection, things that are scarce in a war. They end up falling into each other's arms, despite all their guilt, for treading on dangerous ground. There are reflections on how different or the same they are; painful reflections on the war, and all its stupidity. I was impressed, because the author of this fic captured all the sensitivity of the film, so that the scenes he described would easily fit into the script. I wish all the fics on Nyah were always sensitive and beautiful like this, despite all the melancholy and brutal themes. The author is to be congratulated.”

In the vast and indifferent fabric of space-time, where improbability is a constant and logic is rarely invited for tea, there exists the Department of Interdimensional Bureaucracy (DIB). Its purpose? To ensure that reality remains minimally functional or, at least, sufficiently confusing so that no one notices otherwise. But something went wrong. Horribly, catastrophically, fill-out-three-copies-of-reports wrong. Immanuel Breckford, a man whose greatest achievement until then was remembering where he left his keys, unexpectedly finds himself involved in one of the DIB's most catastrophic failures. Upon receiving a Temporary Ontological Adjustment Request Form 42/B, his existence is recalculated. To correct this cosmic blunder, the DIB sends Artemis Xyllan-7, Senior Auditor and specialist in metaphysical disasters. Armed with an expired stopwatch, a pen that alters probabilities, and the patience of a black hole, she has little time (and even less desire) to fix the problem before the universe decides to file Immanuel away permanently.

The world they knew no longer exists. Now, all the survivors live in a refuge created by a scientist who died in an attempt to save humanity from something that even he cannot explain. Five years later, his son Victor, who managed to be saved when he was fourteen, and his friends set out to search their new city, which the survivors dubbed the 'New Order'. Light at the End of the World

In Hawkins, things rarely disappear for good; they change shape, location, or name and keep circulating under the guise of normality. In the summer of 1985, the town is still awash in color, music, and activity, while small inconsistencies remain scattered among ordinary events, unfinished stories, and coincidences that seem to linger longer than they should. For someone who came here hoping to find nothing but distance, the place begins to take on a strangeness that is difficult to pin down, as if something were always slightly out of place, too close to ignore and too obscure to name.
