The story told to the children and the population was that the 13th district was destroyed by the capital as it provided it with nuclear weapons and was now an intact and radioactive land. The Hunger Games is a reality show in which viewers from all over Panem watch their own children (except the Capitol) fight brutally to the death in an open-air arena with little help from a few sponsors until that only one victor remains. Children are chosen at random between 12 and 18 years old, with a boy and a girl from each of the 12 districts.
