I put my hands on my face, still lying on my bed. My last night hadn't been one of the best. My 16th birthday was coming up and my parents were waiting for me for a chat. I already knew exactly what we were going to talk about: my marriage. I didn't feel ready, but according to them, I was at the perfect age. My family and I were in crisis, the coffee acquired a blight and production was very low. My father had to sell some land, but unfortunately our money was still insufficient, because in addition to food, we had to pay the servants - slavery had been abolished exactly two years ago -, and still try to invest in business. My parents believed that if I married the Count's son, we would be safe, given that the Count owned a sugar cane mill, which was exported to Europe, in addition to his land properties, of course. There was only one problem. I had never seen the Count's son.
