Hannibal Lecter didn't need to say what he felt, for he showed it with his crimes. Does not make sense? Not. But killing was the only beautiful way he could have Will's attention to himself. For his artwork. For his love for him.
Will's scent is unique. It smells of madness and instability, it smells of fear, it smells of surrender and pleasure. Will Graham smells like Hannibal Lecter.
As long as Will was alive, Hannibal would feel connected to him. And that connection would slowly poison Hannibal from the inside out, it would slowly contaminate everything if he didn't put a stop to it. This would never have happened if he had killed and eaten Will when he had the chance.
