The Doctor was in one of those periods when he thought it best to be alone. It was that phase when he believed he was toxic and should push everyone away... Until looking for a Zygon, he makes a mistake that brings him closer to a good candidate for a mate. Kali was used to an ordinary and even boring life, and maybe she shouldn't have wanted a change so much, especially since her bond with the Doctor put her in the Storm Chaser's crosshairs.
