The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, often abbreviated as TMNT, are a group of four turtles, who were named after four Italian Renaissance artists named Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, and were trained in the art of ninjutsu by a mouse sensei with the name Splinter. From their home, the sewers of New York, they battle criminals, demonic overlords, mutated creatures and invading aliens, while at the same time trying to remain hidden from society. At one point or another and in almost every TMNT story, Shredder, leader of the New York section of the Foot Clan criminal group, is the archenemy of Splinter and the Turtles. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, their first appearance was in 1984 in the comic book Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles published by Mirage Comics, later expanding to animated television series, movies, video games, toys, and many other products.
